Why eco friendly products are important

Most of us are aware that environmental damage is occurring everywhere around us, for many reasons. Waste and pollution are damaging our planet, both on land and in the ocean.

All the products that we use to clean our homes, and ourselves, go down our drainpipes and end up in our waterways. Even though this water goes to a water treatment plant before being released into the waterways, considering the amount of different products each household uses, that’s a hell of a lot of chemicals going down those pipes that the treatment process is unable to contain. The problem is, a lot of these chemicals are toxic to the environment and to animals.

People assume that cleaning products are complicated and that we need a heap of chemicals to make everything sparkly, clean and sanitised. The truth is we don’t. Before we were presented with a vast amount of choice on cleaning products for just about every surface, people used simple yet effective methods such as bi-carb and vinegar for just about everything.

One big thing that attracts people to certain products is the smell. Manufacturers know this, and invest a lot of money on making sure their products appeal to our sense of smell. Whether it’s a ‘clean’ or ‘relaxing’ smell, someone can be persuaded to buy a product simply based on a whiff!

The down side of this is that artificial fragrances are toxic to both our skin and the environment. Our skin is our biggest organ and absorbs the chemicals that we apply to it. Over time, this can cause a whole range of health problems, but people may not realise this until it’s too late. A simple solution is to use essential oils as a fragrance. A few drops to any cleaning product or skincare is all you need! Essential oils also have other benefits. Eucalyptus and tea tree oils are antibacterial and antiviral and lavender has long been used for relaxation. Lemon oil is a disinfectant and eliminates mould, as does clove oil.

People are becoming more aware of the impact our actions have on the environment and we see the damage that’s being done. Companies are slowly moving away from harmful chemicals and people are discovering alternatives to products they have become used to. So why not give eco cleaning products a go, we promise you won’t be disappointed!
